Her career spanned nearly seven decades. She became one of the most famous performers of her era. People recognized her for her great skill in Shakespearean plays. She was a central figure in the British theater world. Her life combined professional triumph with complex personal challenges.

Acting was a craft Terry learned from a very young age. She was born into a theatrical family in Coventry, England. Her parents, Benjamin and Sarah, were both comic actors. Benjamin provided her early training in stage diction. Diction is the art of pronouncing words clearly and correctly. This training helped her speak her language well throughout her life. She made her first stage appearance in 1856 at age nine.

Terry's early career involved many different types of performances. She worked in touring companies across the British provinces. She played roles in Shakespearean plays, farces, and melodramas. In 1862, she joined a stock company in Bristol. There, she performed burlesque roles that required singing and dancing. She also played characters like Nerissa in *The Merchant of Venice*. By 1863, at age 15, she played Titania in *A Midsummer Night's Dream*. These diverse roles helped her build a strong professional foundation.

Her personal life often intersected with the art world. At age 16, she married the artist George Frederic Watts. He was 46 years old at the time.

The marriage lasted only ten months before they separated. Terry later lived with the architect Edward William Godwin. They had two children, Edith and Edward. Their relationship was considered scandalous by the standards of that time.

In 1878, Terry reached a major professional milestone. She joined the company of Henry Irving as his leading lady.

As her career progressed, Terry took on new responsibilities. In 1903, she became the manager of London's Imperial Theatre. This was at the suggestion of George Bernard Shaw. She opened a new play by Henrik Ibsen at the theater. However, this business venture was a financial failure. Following this, she turned to touring and giving lectures. She gave many lectures discussing the heroines of Shakespeare. Between 1916 and 1922, she also appeared in several films.

Terry's influence extended to many different artistic movements. Because of her marriage and her portraits, she became a cult figure. She was associated with the Pre-Raphaelite and Aesthetic movements. This included famous figures like the poet Oscar Wilde.
