She became one of the most successful and highest-paid performers of her era. At the height of her career, she earned a yearly income exceeding $1 million. Adams is best remembered for her portrayal of the character Peter Pan. She was the first actress to play this role in the 1905 Broadway production. Her influence extended beyond acting into the world of technical theater and invention.

Adams began her journey in the theater as a very young child. She traveled on tours while accompanying her mother, who was also an actress.

Her very first stage appearance occurred at just two months old. By the age of five, she was already playing starring roles in San Francisco. She eventually moved to New York and made her Broadway debut at age 16. This early exposure to the stage allowed her to develop her professional skills rapidly.

Her career reached a major turning point through her collaboration with the writer J. M. Barrie. In 1896, Barrie saw her perform in the play Rosemary. He decided she was the perfect actress to play Lady Babbie in his play, The Little Minister.

Adams's connection to Barrie continued with the 1904 play Peter Pan; or, The Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up.

Although she faced a health scare involving an emergency appendectomy, she assumed the role. Her performance in this production became her most iconic work. Interestingly, the collar she designed for her Peter Pan costume became a famous fashion trend. This style became known as the "Peter Pan collar."

Beyond her acting, Adams was a significant contributor to theatrical technology. She worked on production design and innovative technical lighting to improve her shows.

Her expertise in this field led her to be named as an inventor on three separate light bulb patents. During the 1920s, she collaborated with General Electric to develop more powerful stage lighting. She also worked with the Eastman Company to advance color photography. It is believed she wanted better lighting to prepare for future color films.

Adams was also known for performing on a massive, epic scale. In 1909, she produced a large-scale version of the play Joan of Arc at the Harvard University Stadium.

This production involved a company of approximately 2,000 people. To support such a huge show, a special electric light plant was installed. The production featured a constructed background and a realistic forest to create an immersive experience.

Her life was shaped by a diverse family history and personal interests. She was born in Salt Lake City, Utah Territory, in 1872. Her ancestry included descendants of the Mayflower passenger John Howland. While she was not always public about her personal beliefs, she spent time in Catholic convents later in life. In 1922, she donated her New York estates to the Sisters of the Cenacle. She eventually retired to upstate New York after a career that spanned several decades.
