She became a legendary figure on the Broadway stage. Her career was defined by her ability to connect with live audiences. She was a muse for the famous songwriting team Rodgers and Hammerstein. This partnership helped shape the history of American musical theater. Martin originated many of the most iconic leading roles in the twentieth century.

Her journey toward stardom began with a talent for mimicry and observation. As a child, she developed a photographic memory. She watched movies closely to learn how to act and dance. She could perfectly imitate the movements of Ruby Keeler. She could also replicate the singing style of Bing Crosby. This skill allowed her to master the art of performance through imitation. She eventually moved from mimicry to professional training in dance and song.

Martin's path to professional success involved several distinct stages. She first taught dance by mastering the waltz clog. This is a traditional type of dance. She later opened her own dance studio in Mineral Wells, Texas. There, she learned to use a microphone and how to phrase blues songs. Her big break occurred during an accidental audition. She walked into the wrong room and was asked to sing. Despite not knowing her musical key, she performed "How Red the Rose, How Blue the Sky."

Her discovery changed the course of her life. A man named Oscar Hammerstein II heard her sing. He believed she possessed something truly special. This encounter launched her career in radio and on Broadway. She performed on national networks like CBS and NBC. She appeared in shows such as Kraft Music Hall and Stage Door Canteen. Her Broadway debut came in the Cole Porter production Leave It to Me! in 1938.

She also starred as Nellie Forbush in South Pacific in 1949. Later, in 1959, she played Maria von Trapp in The Sound of Music.

Throughout her life, Martin maintained a preference for live performance over film. She felt that movies lacked the direct connection found in a theater. However, she did bring her stage magic to television. She performed her role as Peter Pan on NBC in several years. She also appeared in live television broadcasts of Annie Get Your Gun. Her influence extended to her personal life and honors. She was named a Kennedy Center Honoree in 1989. She also received two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

In her later years, Martin sought a different kind of life. She and her husband, Richard Halliday, lived on a vast ranch in Brazil. The ranch was named Nossa Fazenda Halliday. They lived near Anápolis in the state of Goiás. The local people affectionately called her Dona Maria. This period of her life was a quiet contrast to the bright lights of Broadway. Even in retirement, her legacy as a performer remained strong.
