He is most famous for creating the legendary character Peter Pan. This ageless boy became a symbol of childhood fantasy and adventure. Barrie's work bridged the gap between children's stories and adult drama. He used his imagination to explore complex themes of growing up and memory. His literary contributions helped shape the landscape of early 20th-century theater.

Barrie's creative process often drew directly from his personal experiences and surroundings. His stories frequently blended domestic reality with magical elements. For example, his 1902 novel, The Little White Bird, introduced the character of Peter Pan. This character later moved into the 1904 West End play, Peter Pan, or The Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up. This play set the story in the fantasy world of Neverland. It featured an ageless boy and a young girl named Wendy. The name Wendy was actually inspired by a real girl named Margaret Henley.

His writing career can be divided into several distinct phases and styles. He began with successful novels set in Scotland, such as The Little Minister. These works were part of the Kailyard School, a style often seen as nostalgic. Later, he wrote the "Tommy" novels, including Sentimental Tommy, about boys clinging to fantasy. He also became a prolific playwright with works like The Admirable Crichton. This play was a social commentary about an aristocratic family shipwrecked on an island. He even wrote comic operas and parodies of other famous dramatists.

Barrie's early life in Kirriemuir, Scotland, deeply impacted his later themes. He was the ninth of ten children in a Calvinist family. When he was six, his brother David died in an ice-skating accident. This loss profoundly affected his mother, Margaret Ogilvy. Barrie tried to comfort her by imitating his late brother's mannerisms. This experience with loss and the desire to remain a boy likely influenced his writing. He was a voracious reader who loved adventures and pirate stories.

Barrie achieved significant professional recognition throughout his life. He earned an M.A. from the University of Edinburgh in 1882. He worked as a journalist for the Nottingham Journal before becoming a full-time author. In 1913, King George V made him a baronet. He was also named a member of the Order of Merit in 1922. His success was massive, especially with the Peter Pan works. In a remarkable act of generosity, he gave the copyrights to these works to Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children in 1929.

His social life was as rich as his literary one. Barrie moved in elite literary circles and had many famous friends. He was a neighbor to the playwright George Bernard Shaw. He also maintained friendships with H. G. Wells and the novelist John Galsworthy. He even participated in organized sports, joining the Authors Cricket Club in 1891.

These connections allowed him to be a central figure in the British cultural scene.

Barrie's legacy continues through his stories and his philanthropic gift. The Peter Pan character remains a global icon of childhood. His play established traditions, such as having women play the role of Peter Pan. This started because children were not permitted to act on stage at the time. Today, Great Ormond Street Hospital continues to benefit from his creative legacy. His work remains a vital link between Victorian traditions and modern fantasy.
