Her professional career spanned more than six decades. She performed on both the live stage and on screen. Ashcroft was celebrated for her commitment to the craft of acting. She was known for a naturalistic style of performance. This approach brought a sense of truth to her characters. She worked extensively in classical Shakespearean plays and modern dramas. Her career helped shape the modern landscape of British theatre.

Ashcroft developed her skills through a disciplined approach to performance. She studied at the Central School of Speech and Drama. The school focused heavily on voice and elegant diction. However, Ashcroft found more inspiration in reading about acting theory. She studied the work of Constantin Stanislavski. He was a famous director from the Moscow Art Theatre. From her work with director Theodore Komisarjevsky, she learned vital lessons. She believed an actor must remain a thinking human being. This discipline was necessary even during scenes of high emotional stress.

Her career moved through several distinct stages and types of performance. Early on, she worked with small companies in fringe theatres. She preferred these smaller settings to the fame of the West End. In the 1930s, she joined the Old Vic company. The Old Vic was a theatre that served working-class audiences. It offered plays and operas at very low ticket prices. Later, she became a key member of permanent theatrical ensembles. These groups included the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre. She also transitioned to television and cinema in the 1980s.

Ashcroft's journey began in Croydon, Surrey, in 1907.

She was the only daughter of William and Violetta Ashcroft. Her father was a land agent who died during the First World War. Although her parents opposed her career choice, she was determined. At age 16, she enrolled in drama school. She graduated in 1927 with a Diploma in Dramatic Art. By 1929, she was already starring in the West End. Her early success was marked by her role in the production Jew Süss.

Throughout her life, Ashcroft held many significant roles. In 1930, she played Desdemona in Othello at the Savoy Theatre. This production was notable for starring Paul Robeson. The experience led to a political awakening for Ashcroft. She was angered by the hate mail she received regarding her co-star. In 1935, she played Juliet in a major West End production. This run lasted from October 1935 to March 1936. During this time, she performed opposite actors Laurence Olivier and John Gielgud.

Her impact on theatrical institutions was profound. In 1958, Peter Hall asked her to join his new plan. He wanted to create a permanent, salaried company. This group would perform both classical and new plays. Ashcroft's leadership was essential to the success of the Royal Shakespeare Company.

These companies provided a foundation for post-war ensemble acting in Britain. Her presence helped bridge the gap between traditional theatre and modern experimental works.

In her later years, Ashcroft achieved massive success in film and television. This shift occurred primarily during the 1980s. She earned several of the highest honors in the acting profession. Her awards included three BAFTAs and a Golden Globe Award. She also won a prestigious Academy Award. She received nominations for two Primetime Emmy Awards. These accolades recognized her ability to translate her stage presence to the screen. Even as she moved into new media, she remained a respected figure in the arts.
