Writers often praised her unique talents. Edmond Rostand called her the "queen of the pose." He also called her the "princess of the gesture." The writer Victor Hugo praised her "golden voice." Her career went far beyond the traditional theater stage.

Bernhardt was a true pioneer of new media. She was one of the first prominent actresses to make sound recordings. She also acted in the very early days of motion pictures.

Beyond acting, she was an accomplished visual artist. She worked as a painter and a sculptor.

She even helped publicize the work of Alphonse Mucha. Mucha was a highly sought-after artist of the Art Nouveau style. Through her influence, his fame grew significantly during this period.

Her path to stardom began with a dramatic moment in Paris.

She was born Henriette-Rosine Bernard on October 22, 1844. Her mother, Judith Bernard, was a Dutch Jewish courtesan. After her father died overseas in 1857, a family council met. Charles Morny suggested that she should become an actress. This idea initially horrified her because she had never entered a theater. However, a performance of Racine's *Britannicus* changed her mind. The play's emotion moved her to sob loudly in the audience. Alexandre Dumas saw her passion and called her "my little star."

To prepare for a professional career, she studied at the Paris Conservatory.

She studied there from January 1860 until 1862. Two prominent actors served as her teachers. Joseph-Isidore Samson taught her the power of simplicity. Jean-Baptiste Provost taught her diction and grand gestures. She also changed her professional name from "Bernard" to "Bernhardt." She officially debuted on August 31, 1862, in the role of *Iphigénie*. While she was a talented student, her early debut was not a total success. She experienced stage fright and rushed her lines during the performance.

Bernhardt's career was marked by both rapid rises and sudden departures. She initially worked at the prestigious Comédie-Française. However, she did not stay long due to various conflicts. She once had a physical altercation with an actress named Madame Nathalie. This disagreement led to Bernhardt being asked to leave the company. She then moved to the Gymnase theater to work as an understudy. Her life was also filled with personal complexities. In 1864, she gave birth to her only child, Maurice Bernhardt. She never publicly discussed Maurice's father, though she had many famous connections.

As her fame grew, she became a global icon.

Bernhardt's life connects many different worlds of art and history. She bridged the gap between classical theater and modern technology. Her work in sound and film helped define new ways of performing. Her interest in sculpture and painting showed her diverse creative spirit. Even her personal life was linked to the highest levels of European society. She was a woman who navigated the strict rules of her time with great strength. Her legacy lives on through her recordings and her many artistic contributions.
