Most studios only used simple tools like beards or mustaches to mark villains. Actors were expected to apply their own makeup for every role. Chaney turned this necessity into a specialized skill. He developed unique techniques to alter his facial features and even his body posture. This mastery gave him a massive competitive advantage in a crowded industry. He became a "complete package" for studios because he could inhabit almost any role.

Chaney's career included many distinct stages and types of performances. He began in vaudeville and theater in 1902. He later moved to California in 1910 to enter the film industry. Between 1912 and 1917, he worked for Universal Studios in small character parts. He eventually moved to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, where he became a major star. His roles ranged from intense horror characters to conventional crime and adventure roles.

He was born in 1883 to parents who were both deaf. As a child of deaf adults, he became highly skilled in American Sign Language. His career faced a major turning point due to a family scandal. In 1913, his first wife, Cleva Creighton, attempted suicide. This event forced Chaney out of the theater and into the world of film. He later married Hazel Hastings, with whom he shared a quiet, private life.

His impact on the industry is measured by his massive successes.

Some reports claimed the unmasking scene was so shocking that viewers reacted with intense fear or fainting. Despite the horror, Chaney aimed to create sympathy for his characters. He wanted to show that even the most disfigured people could possess noble ideals.

Chaney was a mentor to many future stars of the silver screen.
