Fairbanks did more than just act; he was a pioneer who helped shape the business of filmmaking. He helped establish major industry organizations and fought for the independence of artists.

Fairbanks' career followed a specific path from the stage to the silver screen. He began his journey in amateur theater in Denver, Colorado. After leaving school at age 15 in 1899, he joined a traveling acting troupe. He spent two years touring the country as an actor and assistant stage manager. By 1902, he moved to New York to perform on Broadway. He worked various jobs, including a clerk in a Wall Street office, to support his acting career.

Eventually, he moved to Los Angeles in 1915 to begin his film career.

His film roles transitioned through several distinct stages. Early in his Hollywood career, he was primarily a comedic actor. He worked under the supervision of director D. W. Griffith and appeared in romantic comedies.

However, he revolutionized his career in 1920 by moving into the adventure genre. He starred in *The Mark of Zorro*, which introduced a new type of adventure-costume picture. This success led to a series of elaborate films, including *Robin Hood* in 1922 and *The Thief of Bagdad* in 1924.

These films set the standard for the "swashbuckling" genre, characterized by heroic stunts and historical settings.

Fairbanks was also a powerful businessman and industry leader. In 1919, he co-founded United Artists to protect his artistic freedom.

He started this company alongside Charlie Chaplin, Mary Pickford, and D. W. Griffith. This move allowed them to control their own distribution and profits. Fairbanks also helped organize the Motion Picture Fund to assist industry workers in need. In 1927, he was elected the first President of the Motion Picture Academy of Arts and Sciences. He even hosted the very first Academy Awards ceremony in 1929.

His personal life was also deeply connected to the film industry. In 1920, he married actress Mary Pickford. The couple was widely celebrated by the public and known as "Hollywood royalty."

They lived at a famous estate called Pickfair in Beverly Hills. Their marriage and high status made them international celebrities. However, the couple eventually separated in 1933 and divorced in 1936. Fairbanks later married Sylvia, Lady Ashley, in Paris in 1936.

The arrival of "talkies," or films with synchronized sound, marked a difficult period for Fairbanks. The transition to sound in the late 1920s changed how movies were made and consumed. This technological shift, combined with declining health, caused his career to fade.
