He was celebrated for his ability to transform his appearance and personality. To Muni, acting was not merely a career; it was a deep obsession. He approached every role with intense dedication and meticulous preparation. This commitment helped him become one of the most prestigious actors at Warner Bros. during the 1930s. He was even given the rare privilege of choosing his own parts.

Muni's acting process involved a rigorous study of his subjects. When preparing for a biographical role, he would immerse himself in research. For his role in *The Story of Louis Pasteur*, he read almost everything in the library. He studied the lives of Pasteur, Lister, and their contemporaries. He also practiced the physical mannerisms and gestures of the real people. This method allowed him to inhabit characters with great authenticity. He even studied photographs to perfect his physical movements.

A key part of his transformation was his mastery of makeup.

Muni learned these advanced techniques from his parents, who were both actors. He used makeup to change his face so completely that he earned a nickname. Film historians called him "the new Lon Chaney" because of his incredible transformations. His skill was evident early in his life. At only 12 years old, he played an 80-year-old man on stage. He later played seven different characters in the film *Seven Faces*.

Muni's life began in Lemberg, in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. He was born Frederich Meier Weisenfreund in 1895 to a Jewish family. His Hebrew name was Meshilem, and Yiddish was his first language. In 1902, his family emigrated to the United States and settled in Chicago. He began his career in the Yiddish theater alongside his parents. By 1926, he moved to Broadway, where he performed his first English role. He eventually moved to Hollywood, where his name was anglicized to Paul Muni.

For this performance, he won the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play. He also performed in the British production of *Death of a Salesman* in 1949. His stage presence was so powerful that a "Muni whisper" could reach the back of a theater balcony. This ability showed his incredible control over his voice.

Muni's life was marked by both professional triumph and personal health struggles. He was known to be a very shy man in public. He often enjoyed quiet walks in Central Park with his wife, Bella. In 1955, he faced a serious eye ailment that required surgery. A tumor was discovered in his left eye, and the eye was eventually removed. Despite these challenges, he returned to the stage to finish his run in *Inherit the Wind*. He lived in California during his later years and died in 1967 at age 71. His legacy remains that of an actor of great integrity and unique skill.
