It began as a book in 1965. Frank Herbert wrote it. Many people call it a great work. It has won big awards like the Hugo Award.

The story happens far in the future. Humans live in a vast empire. They do not use computers or robots. A past war made these machines illegal. People must train their minds to think instead. Some people, called Mentats, act like human computers.

Much of the story happens on Arrakis. This is a harsh desert planet. It is also called Dune. Arrakis is the only place to find a spice called melange. This spice is very important. It helps people travel through space. It also helps people live longer.
