It began with a novel by Frank Herbert in 1965. This book is often called the best-selling science fiction novel ever. It won important prizes like the Hugo Award in 1966.

Since then, the story has grown into a huge universe. People have made movies, TV shows, and even video games about it. Some fans even use names from the books for real places on Saturn's moon, Titan.

The stories take place in a very distant future. Humans live in a massive empire called the Imperium. In this future, people have banned all "thinking machines." This means they do not use computers, robots, or artificial intelligence.

Because they cannot use machines, humans have trained their minds to be amazing. Some people, called Mentats, train to think like human computers. Others, like the Bene Gesserit, use special training to gain great physical and mental powers.

Most of the action happens on a desert planet named Arrakis. Many people also call this planet "Dune." It is a very harsh place with almost no rain.

Arrakis is the only place in the universe to find a substance called melange. People call it "the spice." This spice is very important for space travel. It helps pilots navigate through space and helps people live longer lives.

Getting the spice is a very hard job because of the environment. Giant sandworms live under the desert sands of Arrakis. These worms are drawn to rhythmic sounds made on the sand. Because the spice is so valuable, many powerful groups fight for it. The story follows noble families, such as House Atreides, as they deal with these dangers. These groups compete for power and wealth within the great empire.

The history of this world is very long and complex. It includes a past war called the Butlerian Jihad. This was a fight against machines that changed how humans lived. After that war, new groups like the Spacing Guild and House Corrino rose to power. Frank Herbert wrote the original books, and his son Brian Herbert later wrote more. Together, they have published 23 books that explore this vast and exciting universe.
