His books were very popular all over the world. More than 45 million copies of his books have been sold. People have translated his writing into over 50 different languages. Translating him is a hard job for many people. This is because he liked to make up his own new words. He used these special words to play with language in clever ways.

Lem's writing often explored very deep questions. He used science fiction to think about how technology works. He wondered if humans could ever really talk to aliens. He thought that alien intelligence might be too different to understand. In his book Solaris, he wrote about a living ocean on a planet. He also wrote about smart machines and tiny mechanical insects.

He was born in Lwów, which was part of Poland then. He grew up in a house on Bohdan Lepky Street. His father was a doctor named Samuel Lem. His mother was named Sabina Woller. During a difficult time called the war, Lem had to work hard to stay safe. He worked as a car mechanic and a welder. He even helped the Polish resistance by giving them supplies. These hard years shaped the way he saw the world.

After the war, Lem moved to Kraków.

He decided to study medicine at the Jagiellonian University. He finished his studies but chose not to become a doctor. He did not want to work as a military doctor. He also said that seeing blood made him want to leave medicine. He started writing books in 1946. His first science fiction novel was called The Man from Mars. In the 1950s, he had to deal with state censors. These were people who checked books to make sure they followed government rules. Because of this, he focused more on science fiction.

Lem became a very productive writer after 1956. He wrote seventeen books between 1956 and 1968. He wrote a famous book called Summa Technologiae. This book predicted things like virtual reality and artificial intelligence. He also wrote about how humans might change themselves over time. Even though he was famous, he sometimes felt sad about the future. He worried that too much information might be bad for people. In 2021, the Polish government named it the Stanisław Lem Year. This was to celebrate his amazing life and his many great books.
