It was written by Frank Herbert. He first published it in 1965. The story takes place in the far future. It follows a boy named Paul Atreides.

Paul's family must rule a desert planet called Arrakis. This world is very dry and harsh. However, Arrakis is the only place to find spice. Spice is a valuable drug called melange. It helps people live longer. It also helps pilots fly ships through space. Because spice is so important, many groups fight for it.

Herbert found ideas for his story in the real world. He visited the Oregon Dunes in the United States.

The moving sand there inspired the desert of Arrakis. He also used ideas from history and nature. He studied how plants and animals live in dry lands. He even used words from old languages. The book is very popular. It has won many big awards. People have also made movies based on the book. Some of these films have won many Academy Awards.
