Donna worked with a man named Gérard Mourou. They found a new way to use lasers. A laser is a beam of very strong light. Usually, very strong light can break a laser. This happens because the light focuses itself too much. It can damage the parts of the machine.

Donna and Gérard used a way called chirped pulse amplification. This is a set of steps to make light stronger. First, they stretch the laser pulse out in time. Then, they make the pulse stronger. Finally, they squeeze the pulse back together. This makes a very short and powerful beam of light.

These beams are very precise. They can make tiny, sharp cuts. Because of this, doctors use them for eye surgery. This has helped millions of people see better.

In 2018, Donna won the Nobel Prize in Physics. She was only the third woman to win this prize. She is a professor at the University of Waterloo in Canada.
