Donna Strickland is a famous Canadian scientist who studies light. She is an optical physicist, which means she studies how light behaves.

Her work focuses on something called pulsed lasers. These are lasers that send out very short bursts of light. This work is important because it helps us understand how light works at very high speeds. It also allows us to use light in very precise ways.

Strickland found a way to make laser light much stronger without breaking the machine. Before her discovery, high-power laser pulses would focus themselves too much. This would damage the parts of the laser that make the light stronger. To fix this, she and her partner used chirped pulse amplification. First, they stretch the laser pulse out in time and color. Next, they make the pulse stronger while it is stretched. Finally, they squeeze the pulse back into its original short shape.

This creates an extremely powerful and short beam of light.

Donna began her journey in science in Ontario, Canada. She was born on May 27, 1959, in Guelph. She went to McMaster University to study engineering physics. She chose this school because it taught about lasers and light. Later, she moved to the University of Rochester for her graduate studies. There, she worked at the Laboratory for Laser Energetics. It was during this time that she worked with Gérard Mourou. They published their big discovery in 1985.

Her work has led to many amazing things in our world. These powerful laser beams can make extremely precise, tiny cuts. Because they are so sharp, doctors use them for laser surgery. This technique has helped millions of people with corrective eye surgery.

In 2018, Strickland won the Nobel Prize in Physics. She shared this prize with Gérard Mourou. She was only the third woman ever to win this prize. This followed Marie Curie in 1903 and Maria Goeppert Mayer in 1963.

Today, Strickland is a professor at the University of Waterloo. She leads a group of scientists who study ultrafast lasers. She has held many important roles in science groups like Optica. She even served as the president of Optica. Her work helps us push the limits of what light can do. She even studies how lasers might help fix the lens in the human eye. This helps people who have trouble seeing clearly as they get older.
