He studies how light works using lasers. Lasers are beams of light that can be very strong. Mourou is a pioneer in electrical engineering and laser science. He won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2018. This is one of the highest honors in science. His work helps us understand the tiny parts of our world.

He helped invent a way called chirped pulse amplification, or CPA. This is a way to make very intense laser pulses. First, the team stretches the laser pulse out. This makes the peak power lower so it is easier to handle. Next, they use normal tools to make the light much bigger. Finally, they squeeze the light back into a very short pulse. This creates an ultrashort-pulse that is incredibly powerful.

Mourou began his journey in Albertville, France. He was born there on 22 June 1944. He earned his PhD from Pierre and Marie Curie University in 1973. Later, he moved to the United States to study more. He was a student at the University of California San Diego. In 1977, he became a professor at the University of Rochester. It was there that he worked with his student, Donna Strickland.

Mourou has worked at many important places. He joined the University of Michigan in 1988. He also helped lead the Center for Ultrafast Optical Science. In 2005, he returned to France to work at the École polytechnique. He also worked on the Extreme Light Infrastructure project starting in 2007. In October 2024, he became a professor at Peking University. He has won many awards, like the R. W. Wood Prize in 1995.

These powerful lasers do more than just sit in a lab. They can create pulses that last only one attosecond. An attosecond is one-billionth of a billionth of a second. This is so fast that we can see atoms. These tools also help people in their daily lives. Doctors use these lasers for corrective eye surgeries. In the future, they might even help with cancer therapy.
