Willard Boyle was a Canadian scientist. He studied physics. This is the study of how the world works. He was born in Nova Scotia in 1924.

Boyle worked on many big projects. He helped the Apollo space program. He helped pick spots for landing on the moon. He also worked at Bell Labs. There, he helped make a ruby laser. A laser is a special beam of light.

In 1969, Boyle and George E. Smith invented a new tool. They called it a charge-coupled device. We call this a CCD for short. The CCD is a part that can sense light. It lets cameras take digital photos. This tool helped NASA send clear pictures from space to Earth. Because of this work, Boyle won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2009. This is a very famous prize for science.

Boyle lived a long life. He was married to Betty for many years. They even helped start an art gallery together. He died in 2011 at the age of 86. His work still helps us see the world through cameras today.
