Kai found a new way to look at tiny things. He used a method called electron spectroscopy. This is a way to study how small parts of matter are put together. He called his way ESCA. Today, most people call it XPS. This method helps us see the structure of atoms and solids.

Because of this work, Kai won a very big prize. In 1981, he won the Nobel Prize in Physics. He shared this prize with two other men. They were Nicolaas Bloembergen and Arthur Schawlow.

Kai was a teacher for many years. He worked at Uppsala University until 1984. He even worked in a lab at the Ångström Laboratory. He was a member of many science groups around the world. Kai died in 2007 at the age of 89.
