Don LaFontaine was a famous American voice actor. He used his deep voice to tell stories for movies and TV. People often heard him in movie trailers. He recorded more than 5,000 of these trailers. He also did hundreds of thousands of ads and game trailers. Many people called him "The King of Movie Trailers." Others gave him nicknames like "Thunder Throat" or "The Voice of God."

His work had a very specific way of working. He often used a famous phrase to start a story. He would say, "In a world..." followed by a description. This helped people imagine a new place very quickly. He said this helped set the scene for the audience. It became such a famous catchphrase that people used it as a joke.

Don's journey began in Duluth, Minnesota. He was born on August 26, 1940. When he was 13, his voice cracked during a sentence. This gave him the deep bass tones he used later. After high school in 1958, he joined the U.S. Army. He worked as an audio engineer for the Army Band. In 1962, he began working at National Recording Studios in New York City.

Don was a very busy professional. At his peak, he did about 60 promotions every week. Sometimes he finished 35 jobs in just one day. He even built a recording studio in his home in the Hollywood Hills. He worked for many big companies like Paramount and Viacom. He also appeared in GEICO insurance ads. These ads helped people learn his real name and see his face.

His voice was part of many famous things. He voiced trailers for movies like *Shrek* and *Terminator 2: Judgment Day*. He also narrated the documentary *The Making of Star Wars*. People might recognize him from the game show *Jeopardy!* too. Don passed away in September 2008 at age 68. Today, many movie trailers use music and sound instead of a narrator. His voice remains a huge part of film history.
