He was a pioneer for Black actors in the entertainment industry. People loved his work on stage and in movies. He was one of the few people to win an EGOT. This means he won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony. His deep voice was very special to many people. It was a strong and heavy sound called a basso profondo.

His life started with some very hard challenges. He was born in Arkabutla, Mississippi, in 1931. During this time, the Southern United States had laws for racial segregation. When he was five, he moved to Michigan to live with his grandparents. This move was very hard for him. He developed a severe stutter and stopped speaking for many years. A teacher named Donald Crouch helped him find his voice again. He encouraged Jones to read poetry aloud to the class.

Jones worked hard to study and serve his country. He went to the University of Michigan to study drama. Before that, he was a pre-med major. He also served as an officer in the U.S. Army. He was part of the Korean War era. He served in the infantry and even went to Ranger School. After his military service, he moved to New York City. He worked as a janitor while he studied acting at the American Theatre Wing.

He became a star on the Broadway stage.
