He was born Ronald Walken on March 31, 1943, in Astoria, Queens. His parents were immigrants from Germany and Scotland. They owned a local business called Walken's Bakery. Walken was named after a famous actor named Ronald Colman. He grew up in a Methodist family with two brothers named Kenneth and Glenn. As a young boy, he even worked as a trainee lion tamer in a circus. These early years helped shape the many different roles he would play later in life.

Walken began his career by learning how to move and dance.

He trained at the Washington Dance Studio before he moved into acting. He was a child actor on television during the 1950s. He even played a part on a soap opera called The Guiding Light. In 1964, he changed his first name to Christopher. A friend named Monique van Vooren suggested the name would suit him better. He has been a performer in many different ways since those early days. He can tap dance, act in big plays, and even do voice work for cartoons.

His big break in movies happened in the late 1970s.

In 1978, he starred in the film The Deer Hunter. He played a steelworker from Pennsylvania in that movie. This performance earned him an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. He later earned another Academy Award nomination for the movie Catch Me If You Can in 2002. Walken has appeared in many different kinds of stories. Some are scary, some are funny, and some are adventures. His movies have earned more than $1.6 billion in the United States.
