Diss track

arts Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A diss track is a song used to verbally attack another person. The term "diss" is short for disrespect or disparage. These songs are often made by musical artists during a feud. A feud is a long and escalating disagreement between two people. This might happen between former members of the same group. It can also happen between artists on rival record labels. Sometimes, an artist will use a "sneak diss" to attack someone. This means they use mean lyrics without saying the person's name.

Artists build their arguments using many different details. They often include references to past events or mistakes. Listeners can dive into these details to understand the fight. When one person releases a diss track, the other often responds. This back-and-forth makes these songs go viral very quickly. The songs become a way to settle scores through music. It is a way to turn a personal argument into art.

While the term is new, song attacks are very old. In the 1700s, "Yankee Doodle" was used to mock Patriot colonists. The song called them foolish men who thought they were fashionable. In 1963, boxer Muhammad Ali released a comedy album. He used poetic "trash talk" to attack his rival, Sonny Liston. In 1967, reggae musician Lee "Scratch" Perry wrote songs to insult collaborators. He attacked producer Coxsone Dodd in the song "Run for Cover."

Diss tracks became a major part of hip-hop in the 1980s. The Roxanne Wars began in 1984 with Roxanne Shanté. She released "Roxanne's Revenge" to attack the group U.T.F.O. Later, the East Coast and West Coast rivalry grew very famous. This feud involved artists like Tupac Shakur and Notorious B.I.G. In the late 1990s, Jay-Z and Nas had a big battle. Nas released "Ether" in 2001 to respond to Jay-Z. This song was so strong that "ether" became a slang term for a total defeat.

Modern music still sees these intense musical battles today. In 2012, Pusha T and Drake began a long feud. They released many songs against each other through 2018. In 2018, rapper Eminem released "Killshot" to answer Machine Gun Kelly. Most recently, Kendrick Lamar and Drake had a huge battle in 2024. Lamar released songs like "Euphoria" and "Not Like Us" during this time. These modern battles can get hundreds of millions of views on YouTube. They show how music remains a powerful way to express conflict.
