These materials soak up water from the air. This helps stop things from getting wet or rotting. You might find a small packet of desiccant in a box of medicine. This keeps the medicine safe from moisture. Some desiccants are used in food to keep it crunchy.

One common type is silica gel. It is a white solid that is not toxic. It is made in huge amounts every year. Some desiccants can change color to show they are full. For example, cobalt chloride turns from blue to purple or pink. This tells you it has bonded with water.

Desiccants do big jobs in industry too. They are used to dry natural gas. This stops solid ice-like shapes called methane hydrates from forming. These hydrates can block big pipes. In homes, they are used in windows. They sit in tubes to stop water from forming between glass panes. They also help in air conditioning to make air feel better.
