Desiccant

physical science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

A desiccant is a special substance that keeps things dry. It is also called a hygroscopic substance. This means it pulls water from the air around it. Scientists use these to keep things in a state of dryness. This process is called desiccation. Desiccants are the opposite of humectants, which are things that hold moisture.

You might find them in food to keep it crunchy. They also help keep goods safe in shipping containers. This prevents rust and damage from moisture.

There are many ways these materials work. Some are solids that soak up water like a sponge. Other types use chemical bonding to grab water molecules. Some desiccants are chemically inert, which means they do not react with other things. Others are very reactive and need careful handling.

One way to measure them is by their efficiency. This is the ratio of water they can hold compared to their mass. You can also measure how dry the air becomes by its dew point. This tells us how much water is left in the gas.

People have used different materials for a long time. Silica gel is the most common type used today. It is a white, nontoxic solid that does not dissolve in water. Tens of thousands of tons of it are made every year.

Other types include activated charcoal and calcium chloride. There are also molecular sieves, which are often called zeolites. Some people use liquid desiccants like diethylene glycol. This liquid is very important in the gas industry.

Desiccants do many important jobs in the world. In the petrochemical industry, they dry natural gas. This stops methane hydrates from forming. These hydrates are solid shapes that can block big pipes.

In homes, zeolites are used in insulated windows. They sit in small tubes to stop water from forming between the glass. They are also used in refrigeration systems. This helps absorb water left over from building the machine. They even help in air conditioning to make air feel comfortable.

You can see these working in many places. Some desiccants change color to show they are full. Cobalt chloride is an indicator that turns from blue to purple. It can even turn pink when it bonds with more water.

In medicine, small packets keep the air inside the box dry. Farmers use them to help new piglets stay warm. This is because wetness can lead to hypothermia. Even in a lab, scientists use them to dry solvents. They help keep important experiments safe and dry.
