This salt dissolves very easily in water. When it dissolves, it gives off heat. This is called an exothermic process. This heat can be used in self-heating cans.

One big use is de-icing. People use it to melt ice on roads. It works well even in very cold weather.

It is often used in the form of small white spheres. These are called prills.

Calcium chloride also helps with dust. It is hygroscopic. This means it pulls water from the air. When it is sprayed on dirt roads, it keeps a wet layer on top. This holds the dust down.

Food companies use it too. It acts as a firming agent. This helps canned tomatoes and pickles stay firm. It also helps make tofu. In some sports drinks, it acts as an electrolyte. This means it helps carry a tiny bit of electric charge in liquids.
