Calcium acetate

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Calcium acetate is a white salt. You can make it with vinegar. Just soak eggshells in vinegar to make it. You can also use limestone or marble. People could have seen these crystals a long time ago.

This salt helps people with kidney disease. It can bind to phosphate in food. This keeps blood phosphate levels low. It also helps keep bones healthy.

It is used to make tofu. Tofu is a food made from soy milk. This salt works well because it can dissolve in liquid. It is cheaper than other ways.

Some candy uses this salt too. It is known as E263. Teachers also use it for science. They mix it with alcohol to make a gel. The gel looks like a white snowball. It is a flammable gel. This means it can catch fire. The gel can burn for 20 minutes. We do not find pure calcium acetate in nature. Some minerals have it, but humans make them.
