Sodium acetate is a special kind of salt. It is colorless and can even soak up water from the air.

One cool way we use it is in hand warmers. Inside the pack is a liquid solution. This liquid is supersaturated. That means it holds more salt than usual. When you click a metal disc, the liquid turns into solid crystals. This change is exothermic. This means it gives off heat.

You can reuse these warmers. Just put them in boiling water. The heat melts the crystals back into a liquid. This can happen many times.

We use this salt in many other ways too. In food, it helps things stay fresh. It is safe to eat in small amounts. In science, it helps keep the pH level steady. A pH level tells us if something is acidic.

Factories use it for many jobs. It helps make rubber and cotton pads. It can even seal concrete to stop water damage. It is cheaper than other sealants. It is also good for the Earth.
