Calcium acetate

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Calcium acetate is a special kind of chemical salt. It is made from calcium and acetic acid. You might know acetic acid as vinegar. Scientists also call it calcium ethanoate. An older name for it is acetate of lime. This substance is very important in many different ways. It helps in medicine and in food making.

Making this salt is a simple way to work with chemistry. You can soak calcium carbonate in vinegar. You can find calcium carbonate in eggshells. It is also in rocks like limestone or marble. You can also use hydrated lime to make it. The salt often comes as a monohydrate. This means it holds onto one water molecule. This form is common because the dry version pulls moisture from the air.

People may have seen these crystals a long time ago. Both vinegar and calcium carbonate were available in pre-historic times. This means people could have observed it then. Later, it became a common starting material for making acetone. This happened before the cumene process was developed. It was used because it was quite inexpensive.

This salt has many useful jobs in our world. In medicine, it helps people with kidney disease. It binds to phosphate in the food a person eats. This lowers phosphate levels in the blood. Low phosphate helps prevent bone problems. In food, it is used as a stabilizer or a buffer. It is a food additive known as E263. It is often found in candy products.

You can also use it to make tofu. Tofu is made by thickening soy milk. Some people use calcium sulfate for this job. However, calcium acetate is a better alternative. It is soluble, which means it dissolves easily in liquid. It requires less skill and a smaller amount. Science teachers also use it for a fun experiment. They mix it with ethanol to make a white gel. This gel looks like a snowball. It can burn for about 20 minutes.
