physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Zinc acetate is a clear solid. It can be found in two forms. One form has water in it. We call this the dihydrate form. The other form has no water. This is called the anhydrous form.

People use this substance in many ways. It is found in some medicines. For example, it is in throat lozenges. These help treat the common cold. It can also be a dietary supplement. Some people take it as a pill. It helps stop the body from taking in copper. This helps people with Wilson's disease.

You can also put it on your skin. It is used in lotions and ointments. It can help with itchy skin. It is also used for acne. Sometimes it is mixed with an antibiotic.

Factories use it too. It acts as a catalyst. A catalyst helps make a chemical change happen faster. It helps make vinyl acetate from acetylene. About one third of the world uses this way. Scientists make it by using acetic acid. They mix it with zinc metal or zinc carbonate.
