Zinc acetate

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Zinc acetate is a chemical compound with the formula Zn(CH3CO2)2. It usually appears as a colorless solid. You can find it in two primary forms. One version is anhydrous, which means it contains no water. The other is the dihydrate form, written as Zn(CH3CO2)2·2H2O. This version contains two water molecules within its structure.

This compound is important in many different fields. It serves roles in medicine, food science, and heavy industry.

The molecular structure of zinc acetate changes depending on its form. In the anhydrous version, the zinc atom is coordinated to four oxygen atoms. This arrangement creates a tetrahedral environment. These tetrahedral shapes connect through acetate ligands to form various polymeric structures. In the dihydrate form, the zinc takes on an octahedral shape. In this state, both acetate groups act as bidentate ligands.

Scientists use several methods to prepare zinc acetate. One common way is to react acetic acid with zinc metal. Another method involves using acetic acid with zinc carbonate. You can also use a different route involving zinc nitrate and acetic anhydride. A fourth way to make it is by reacting glacial acetic acid with zinc oxide. Each method uses different starting materials to reach the same colorless solid.

Zinc acetate is highly useful in the medical field. It is a component in some medicines, such as lozenges for the common cold. It also serves as a dietary supplement. For example, it can be taken as an oral daily supplement. In patients with Wilson's disease, it helps inhibit the body's absorption of copper.

This makes it a vital tool for managing specific health conditions.

Beyond internal medicine, it is used for topical skin treatments. Zinc acetate acts as an astringent, which is a substance that can shrink or constrict body tissues. It is sold as an ointment or a topical lotion. It is often used as an anti-itch ointment. Sometimes, it is combined with the antibiotic erythromycin to treat acne.

In the industrial sector, zinc acetate plays a major role as a catalyst. A catalyst is a substance that speeds up a chemical reaction. Specifically, it is used to produce vinyl acetate from acetylene. This specific industrial route accounts for approximately one third of the world's production. This method is often practiced in countries like China where environmental regulations are relaxed. This is due to the environmental impact of the process.

Chemical reactions can also transform zinc acetate into new substances. If you heat Zn(CH3CO2)2 in a vacuum, it undergoes a change. It loses acetic anhydride during this heating process. This leaves behind a residue known as basic zinc acetate. Its formula is Zn4O(CH3CO2)6. This cluster compound has a tetrahedral structure with an oxide ligand at its center.

Basic zinc acetate is a common precursor for making metal-organic frameworks, or MOFs. This shows how one chemical can lead to the creation of many complex new materials.
