It has a slightly sweet taste. Because of this taste, people used it a long time ago. They used it to sweeten wine and food.

It was also used in hair dyes and cosmetics.

However, this chemical is very dangerous. It causes lead poisoning, which makes people very sick. Many famous people in history may have been harmed by it. For example, Pope Clement II died in the year 1047. Some think lead in his food caused his death.

Today, we use lead(II) acetate in different ways. It can be a reagent. A reagent is a substance used to cause a change in a test. Scientists use special paper with this chemical to find a gas called hydrogen sulfide. If the gas is there, the paper turns grey. It is also used to help make other lead parts. It can help dyes stick to cloth. It can even help paint dry faster.
