Demography is the scientific study of human populations.

It looks at how groups of people change over time. Experts focus on three main things to understand these changes. They track how many babies are born, which is called fertility. They also track how many people die, which is called mortality. Finally, they look at migration, which is when people move from one place to another. This study helps us understand the size and makeup of a society. It can cover whole countries or smaller groups of people.

Scientists use these facts to see how populations grow or shrink.

Researchers use different ways to collect this important information. One common way is through a census. A census is a large count of every person living in a country.

Governments often conduct a census every ten years. This count includes details like age, sex, and job. Another way to get data is through vital statistics registries. These registries track births and deaths as they happen. In some places, researchers use indirect methods. They might ask people about their siblings or parents to estimate numbers. This is helpful when full records are not available.

People have been thinking about population for a very long time. Ideas about demography go back to ancient times. Writers in Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome shared important thoughts. In the Middle Ages, thinkers in Europe and Muslim sociologists studied these ideas too. In 1662, John Graunt wrote a famous study about deaths in London. He found that one-third of children there died before age sixteen. Later, in 1755, Benjamin Franklin wrote about how populations grow. In the late 1700s, Thomas Malthus worried about food supplies. He feared that people might grow faster than food could be produced.

Many famous names have helped build this field of study. Mathematicians like Edmond Halley helped create life tables for insurance. In 1771, Richard Price published the first textbook on these topics. Later, Alfred J. Lotka made big steps in the early 1900s. He developed a model for what is called a stable population. This model shows how a group might grow if birth and death rates stay the same. In 1855, Achille Guillard defined demography as the history of the human species. He saw it as a way to understand how people change physically and socially. These studies help us make better guesses about the future.

Demography is useful in many parts of our daily lives. Medical institutions use patient demographics to organize important health data. This includes things like birth dates, blood types, and medical history. Businesses also use this data to make smart plans for their locations. It helps them understand the people living near them. Even the way we study the environment uses these ideas. In ecology, researchers look at births and deaths in groups of living things. By studying these patterns, we can better understand our changing world.
