Actuarial science

math Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Imagine you are planning for a very big event far in the future. You might wonder how much money you will need to save. You might also wonder what unexpected things could happen along the way. Actuarial science is the study of these kinds of questions. It uses math and statistics to figure out risk. Risk is the chance that something might happen that we cannot predict.

Actuaries are the professionals who do this work. They help many different industries like insurance, finance, and even medicine. Their main goal is to identify risks so they can help lessen them.

To do this job, actuaries use many different math tools. They use probability, which is the study of how likely things are to happen. They also use statistics to look at patterns in large groups of data. Actuaries must study things like finance, economics, and computer science. In many countries, they must pass very hard exams to prove they are experts. These exams focus on things like predictive analysis. This is a way to use math to guess what might happen next.

They use high-speed computers to run these complex math models.

This field has a long and interesting history. Actuarial science became a formal math subject in the late 17th century. This happened because people wanted long-term insurance for things like life and burial. They needed to know how much money to set aside for the future. This required new ways to estimate things like how long people live. They even created a concept called the present value of a future sum. This helps them understand what money today is worth compared to money later.

Since the 1980s, computers have changed how they work.

Actuaries work in many important areas of our lives. In health insurance, they look at how often people get sick or injured. They study how people use medicine and doctors in different places. In the pension industry, they help manage money for people who have retired. They also look at how the economy and interest rates change over time. Some actuaries even work in the justice system. They use math models to look at the chance of someone breaking a law again.

This work can be used for many different types of insurance.

Being an actuary is considered a very successful career. In 2010, a study by CareerCast ranked it as the number one job in the United States. That study looked at things like pay, stress, and how much people enjoy the work. In 2024, U.S. News & World Report ranked it as the third-best job in business. It was also the eighth-best job in STEM fields. STEM stands for science, technology, engineering, and math.

This shows how much the world relies on these math experts.
