Actuarial science

math Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Imagine you want to plan for a big event in the future. You might wonder how much money you will need. You might wonder what could go wrong. Actuarial science is a way to use math to answer these questions.

People who do this work are called actuaries. They use math and statistics to study risk. Risk is the chance that something unexpected might happen. Actuaries look at things like health and age. They use these facts to help with insurance and pensions. A pension is money set aside for when people stop working.

Actuaries work in many places. They help with life insurance and healthcare costs. They even help with weather risks like earthquakes. Some use math to help in the justice system. They look at the chance that a person might break a law again.

This job is very important. In 2010, one study called it the number one job in the U.S. In 2024, it was a top job in business. Actuaries must pass many hard tests to show they are experts. They use fast computers to make their math even better.
