Demography is the study of human populations.

It looks at how groups change over time. Experts study three main things. They look at births. They look at deaths. They also look at migration, which is when people move.

People have studied this for a long time. Ancient Greeks and Romans had ideas about it. In the 1600s, John Graunt studied deaths in London. He found that one-third of children died before age sixteen. Later, Thomas Malthus worried about food. He thought people might grow too fast for food to keep up.

How do we get this data? One way is a census. A census is a big count of every person in a country.

Governments often do this every ten years. Another way is through registries. These track births and deaths as they happen.

This data helps many people. Doctors use it to learn about patients. Businesses use it to make plans. It even helps us see how the whole world grows.
