He is widely considered the most successful male model of all time. Gandy holds the title of the highest-grossing male model in history. He is also the only male model to appear on the Forbes list of the world's highest-paid models more than once. His physical presence had a significant impact on the fashion industry. Born in Billericay, Essex, he originally intended to become a veterinary surgeon. However, his academic grades were not high enough for that specific field of study. While studying multimedia computing, he worked delivering Porsches and Jaguars to tracks for testing. In 2001, while studying marketing at the University of Gloucestershire, his flatmate entered him into a televised competition. This contest was hosted by Richard and Judy on the ITV program *This Morning*. Gandy won the competition at age 21, earning a contract with Select Model Management in London.

To pursue modeling full-time, Gandy left university shortly before receiving his honors degree. His early career involved working with many diverse companies. These included brands such as Zara, Hugo Boss, H&M, and Carolina Herrera.
