These early years helped shape his hardworking life.

Daniel changed boxing by using a scientific way to fight. Instead of just being strong, he used clever skill. He wrote two books called "The Art of Boxing" and "The Modern Art of Boxing." He also held public exhibitions to show his moves. He started boxing in 1780 when he was only 16 years old. His first match was to help his employer during a tea dispute. He fought a porter for 45 minutes in a street ring.

This win made him a local hero.

His career grew with many famous matches. In 1784, he fought Harry the Coalheaver for 118 minutes. He also had a famous rematch with a tailor named Tom Tyne. In 1787, he won a big match against Sam Martin. A cheering crowd carried him home with lighted torches. They even sang a song called "See the Conquering Hero Comes."

The Prince of Wales gave him 500 pounds. Daniel used this money to open a boxing school in Capel Court.

Daniel had a long rivalry with his former teacher, Richard Humphries.

Daniel once lost a match because he slipped on wet boards. However, he won a huge fight in Stilton in 1789. He won that match in the 65th round after a very long battle.
