People called him the "Boston Strong Boy" because of his great strength. He was a massive star and one of the highest-paid athletes in the world. His career helped start sports journalism in the United States. Newspapers wrote huge stories about his championship matches. This helped set a pattern for how media covers sports today. He was a true icon of his era.

Sullivan's path to fame began in Boston, Massachusetts. He was born on October 15, 1858, to Irish immigrant parents. His parents wanted him to become a Catholic priest. He even started studying at Boston College around 1875. However, he soon left school to play professional baseball. He earned about $30 to $40 every week playing the game. Eventually, he moved from baseball into the world of boxing.

He became a champion through many difficult matches. Sullivan defeated Paddy Ryan in Mississippi in 1882 to become a champion. He is known as the last heavyweight champion to fight using bare knuckles. This style followed the London Prize Ring Rules. He also became the first heavyweight champion to fight using gloves.

In 1887, he received a special championship belt in Boston. The belt had the flags of the US, Ireland, and the United Kingdom on it.

One of his most famous matches was against Jake Kilrain. This fight happened on July 4, 1889, in Richburg, Mississippi. It was a very long and tough event. The match lasted for 75 rounds.

Sullivan even vomited during the 44th round of the fight. In the end, Kilrain's manager threw in the towel to end the match. Thousands of people traveled by special trains just to watch this event.

Sullivan eventually lost his title to "Gentleman Jim" Corbett in 1892. Corbett was younger and used faster boxing moves.

Even after losing, Sullivan was a good sport. He told the crowd he was glad to be beaten by an American. Later in life, he worked as an actor and a speaker. He was even inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1990. His training barn in New York is now a boxing hall of fame.
