As a young man, he worked as a janitor, a porter, and even an assistant to a baker. He later apprenticed as a carriage painter in Dallas. It was there that a shop owner named Walter Lewis introduced him to boxing. Johnson eventually saved enough money to buy his own boxing gloves. He even fought his first big match on a beach in 1895. He won that fight and a prize of $1.50.

His path to the championship was long and full of challenges.

In 1901, he fought Joe Choynski in Galveston, Texas. Although Johnson lost that match, Choynski became a great teacher for him. Choynski taught him how to move and how to defend himself well. Johnson later won the World Colored Heavyweight Championship in Los Angeles in 1903. Finally, on December 26, 1908, he won the world heavyweight title in Australia. He defeated the champion, Tommy Burns, in a match that lasted 14 rounds.

Johnson's success happened during a difficult time in American history known as the Jim Crow era.

Many white people held unfair views and did not want a Black champion. In 1910, he faced James J. Jeffries in a match called the "fight of the century."

Johnson won the fight, which caused many riots across the United States. He also lived a very bold life with flashy cars and gold teeth. He even opened a successful nightclub in Chicago in 1912. He faced many legal troubles because of his personal life and his fame.

Despite these hard times, Johnson remained a powerful figure in history.

Johnson continued to run businesses and make money through endorsement deals. He passed away in a car crash in 1946 at age 68. In 2018, he was given a posthumous pardon by President Donald Trump. His life remains a story of great skill and courage.
