He became the world heavyweight champion between 1930 and 1932. People all over the world watched him closely. His fights were more than just sports matches. They became huge cultural events for many nations. Schmeling was known for being a very smart fighter. Instead of just being wild, he used a style called counterpunching. This means he waited for his opponent to move first. Then, he would use their own movement to land a strong hit.

Winning a championship often happens through skill, but Schmeling had a unique start. In 1930, he fought Jack Sharkey at Yankee Stadium. This match was called the 'Battle of the Continents.' During the fourth round, Sharkey hit Schmeling in a low spot. This move is against the rules and is called a foul. Because of this, the referee disqualified Sharkey. Schmeling became the first man to win the world heavyweight title because of a foul. This win made him a star, but some people called him the 'Low Blow Champion.' He had to work hard to prove he was a true champion.

Schmeling's journey began in a small place called Klein Luckow. He was the son of Max Sr. and Amanda Schmeling. As a teenager, he watched films of famous fighters like Jack Dempsey. This inspired him to start boxing in amateur contests. By 1924, he won the national amateur title in Germany. He soon turned professional to chase bigger fights. In 1928, he moved to the United States to find more success. He became a sensation after a big win against Johnny Risko in 1929. That victory was even called the 'Fight of the Year' by a famous magazine.

One of his most famous moments was against the American star Joe Louis.

In 1936, Schmeling studied films of Louis very carefully. He noticed that Louis dropped his left hand after throwing a jab. Schmeling used this detail to win a massive upset. He knocked Louis down in the fourth round and eventually won the fight. However, they fought again in 1938. In that rematch, Louis won by a technical knockout in the first round. These fights were watched by millions of people around the globe.

Schmeling lived a very long and interesting life. He served as a paratrooper in the German Air Force during World War II. Later, he worked for the Coca-Cola Company after he retired from boxing in 1948. Even though they were rivals, he and Joe Louis became great friends. Their friendship lasted until Louis passed away in 1981. Long after the war, people learned that Schmeling had saved two Jewish children in 1938. He died in 2005 at the age of 99. He was the longest-living heavyweight champion in history.
