Working with heavy iron helped him build very strong arms and shoulders. This hard work gave him the power needed for boxing. He learned a clever style of movement from a fighter named Jem Mace. Fitzsimmons used short and very accurate punches to win his matches. This strength helped him become one of the hardest punchers ever.

His journey to greatness began in New Zealand and Australia.

He entered local tournaments in the early 1880s to test his skill. In 1881, he won a middleweight championship by knocking out five opponents. He later moved to Australia to begin his professional career in 1883. After that, he traveled to the United States to fight for world titles. On January 14, 1891, he won the middleweight title in New Orleans. He defeated Jack Dempsey by knocking him out in the 13th round. This victory made him a true world champion.

One of his most famous moments happened in 1897.

He fought Jim Corbett in Carson City, Nevada, for the heavyweight title. This match was very special because it was the world's first feature film. A man named Enoch J. Rector filmed the entire fight for cinemas. During the match, Fitzsimmons used his famous "solar plexus punch." This was a quick uppercut aimed under the heart. The punch helped him win the title in the 14th round. Even though Corbett was heavier, Fitzsimmons's power won the day.

Fitzsimmons left a lasting mark on the world of sports.
