Damien Hirst is a famous English artist and art collector.

He was a leader of a group called the Young British Artists. This group was very popular in the United Kingdom during the 1990s. Hirst is known for making art that explores the idea of death. Many people find his work surprising or even shocking. He has become one of the wealthiest artists living today. In 2020, his wealth was estimated at 384 million US dollars.

One way Hirst makes art is by using animals. He often places animals in clear tanks filled with formaldehyde. Formaldehyde is a liquid used to preserve things so they do not rot. He has used many different animals for these projects. Some examples include a sheep, a pig, and a cow. He even made a piece with a tiger shark.

This shark piece is called The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living. It is one of his most famous works.

Hirst grew up in Leeds and studied art at Goldsmiths College. He worked on building sites in London for two years. While he was a student, he helped organize a big show called Freeze. This show took place in 1988 in a London building. He also had a job at a mortuary during his studies. This experience likely helped him decide to use death as a theme. He later became very close with a collector named Charles Saatchi. Their professional relationship lasted many years before it ended in 2003.

Hirst has reached many big milestones in his career. In 1995, he won the prestigious Turner Prize. He also made a pattern for the Beagle 2 probe. This pattern helped cameras work on the Mars probe. In 2008, he held a massive auction at Sotheby's. He sold a whole show called Beautiful Inside My Head Forever. This auction raised 111 million pounds.

It broke the record for a single artist's auction. One piece, The Golden Calf, sold for 10.3 million pounds.

Sometimes, people have arguments about Hirst's art. Since 1999, his work has been accused of being copied 16 times. This is called plagiarism, which means using someone else's ideas. For example, a sculpture called Hymn was very similar to a child's toy. Hirst had to settle a legal case because of this. His work is very different from traditional paintings. He uses science, biology, and big ideas to make people think. He wants his art to stay in people's minds forever.
