He is a painter, a photographer, and a designer for the stage. He was a very important part of the Pop art movement during the 1960s. This movement used bright colors and modern ideas to make art. Hockney loves to explore many different ways to create. He uses everything from traditional oils to modern iPad drawing programs. His work matters because he shows us the world in new ways.

One way Hockney makes art is through a method called "joiners."

He creates these by taking many different photographs of the same subject. He then glues the photos together into a patchwork. This creates a single image made of many smaller parts. Because the photos are taken at different times, the view looks unique. He does this to show how human vision actually works. It feels as if the viewer is moving through a space.

His journey as an artist began in England. He was born in Bradford, Yorkshire, in 1937.

He studied at the Bradford College of Art and the Royal College of Art in London. While at college, he showed his talent in a big exhibition. He even had a small protest about how students are graded. He believed artists should be judged only on their artwork. This helped him gain a strong reputation very early on.

In 1964, Hockney moved to Los Angeles in California.

The bright light and colors there inspired his famous swimming pool paintings. He used a new kind of paint called acrylic to get vibrant colors. He also spent much time in London and Paris. In 1972, he painted a famous work called Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures). This painting sold for $90 million in 2018. That sale made it the most expensive work by a living artist.

Today, Hockney's work connects many different worlds. He links old traditions with very new technology. He might use a camera lucida, which is an antique lens device, to help him draw. He also uses digital tools and even fax machines to make prints. He travels between the sunny hills of California and the green countryside of Yorkshire. Whether he is painting a portrait or a landscape, he stays curious. He continues to find beauty in every place he visits.
