Dai Zhen was a smart man from China. He lived during the Qing dynasty. He was born on January 19, 1724. He died on July 1, 1777.

Dai was a scholar who studied many things. He studied math and geography. He also studied how people speak. In 1733, a scholar named Ji Yun hired him. Dai helped edit a big set of books. This set is called the Siku Quanshu.

Dai had new ideas about philosophy. Philosophy is the study of how we think. He belonged to a group called the Han Learning school. This group used a way called Evidentialism. This way used facts to find truth. Dai disagreed with a group called Neo-Confucianism. One group thought people should only look inside themselves. Dai said we must also study the world around us. Another group thought people should not have many desires. Dai thought human desires were a good part of life. He said desires help us understand our own feelings. They also help us feel empathy for other people. Empathy means caring about how others feel. Dai wrote many books about these big ideas.
