A priest named Ma Xiangbo started the school in 1905. At first, it was a school to help students get ready for higher learning. In 1917, it became a private university. It began to teach many subjects. These included business, law, and science.

During a war in 1937, the school had to move to Chongqing. It later moved back to Shanghai in 1946. In 1941, it became a national university. This meant the government could help lead the school.

In 1949, the school changed many things. It began to follow a Soviet model. This means it used a way of teaching from the Soviet Union. In 2000, it merged with a medical school. Now, Fudan has many campuses and 17 hospitals. It even works with schools in other countries like the US and Italy. The school also has a large fund to help new ideas grow.
