Zhu Xi helped shape Neo-Confucianism. This is a way of thinking about life and morals. He believed that everything in the world has two parts. One part is called li, which is a rule or principle. The other part is called qi, which is the physical matter. He thought that every person has a perfect li inside them. This means people are born with goodness. However, our qi can sometimes hide that goodness. We must study and practice to clear our qi.

He taught that knowledge and action go together. He said they are like legs and eyes. You need both to walk and see well. He also used a type of quiet thinking called meditation. This helped him stay focused and calm. His ideas became very important in China for a long time. They were even used in school tests until 1905. His work spread to Japan, Korea, and Vietnam too.
