He lived during the Han dynasty. He was a master of writing and old books. Xu Shen wanted to help people read correctly. At that time, people argued about the meaning of signs. Some used new versions of texts. Others used very old versions. This caused many mistakes in law and study.

To fix this, Xu Shen made a massive dictionary. It is called the Shuowen Jiezi. He finished a draft in 100 CE. He gave it to the Emperor in 121 CE. The book explains how characters were made. It uses a system of 540 radicals. Radicals are small parts used to group signs. He organized them from simple to complex. The book has over 9,000 entries. It looks at how writing changed over time. Many scholars still use his work to study language today. His big project helped keep the spirit of language alive.
