It began with a man who wanted to disappear. He hijacked a Northwest Orient Airlines flight on November 24, 1971. This was the night before Thanksgiving. He used the name Dan Cooper to buy a ticket.

He was flying from Portland, Oregon, to Seattle, Washington. The flight was on a Boeing 727 aircraft. This event is the only unsolved case of air piracy in commercial aviation history.

Cooper’s plan was very specific and bold.

After takeoff, he handed a note to a flight attendant named Florence Schaffner. He told her he had a bomb in his briefcase. He demanded $200,000 in cash and four parachutes. The money had to be in small $20 bills.

He also wanted the plane to refuel in Seattle. After the plane landed, he let the passengers go safely. He then ordered the crew to fly toward Mexico City. He wanted to stop in Reno, Nevada, first.

We do not know exactly who the hijacker was.

Witnesses said he was a white man in his mid-forties. He had dark hair and brown eyes. He wore a black raincoat and a business suit. A reporter made a mistake with his name. Because of that error, the world calls him D.B. Cooper. His true identity remains a secret to this day. Even the FBI could not find out who he really was. They kept an active investigation for forty-five years.

Some clues were found many years later.

In 1980, a boy found some of the ransom money. It was near the banks of the Columbia River. This was about $5,800 of the total amount. The rest of the money was never found. The FBI officially stopped its main investigation in 2016. However, many people still try to solve the mystery. They look for clues to find out his fate.

This event changed how we travel by plane today.

Before this, airport security was not as strict. After the hijacking, airports made big upgrades. They installed metal detectors to check people. They also started making baggage inspections mandatory. They even checked passengers who paid with cash. These changes helped keep all passengers much safer. Now, we see these security steps every time we fly.
