After the attacks, the Zodiac sent many letters to newspapers. He wrote over twenty letters between 1969 and 1974. He used a special symbol that looks like a crosshair. He also sent secret codes called cryptograms to the press.

Experts have worked hard to read these codes. Two of the four cryptograms were finally solved. One was solved in 1969, and another was solved in 2020.

The other two codes remain unsolved today.

Police have looked for the person behind these letters for a long time. They named one man, Arthur Leigh Allen, as a suspect. He was a former teacher who died in 1992. Even though there were many theories, police never officially caught him.

The San Francisco Police Department once called the case inactive. However, they reopened it in 2006. Now, many groups keep the case status as "open."

This includes the FBI and the California Department of Justice.

Today, the Zodiac remains a major part of popular culture. Many amateur detectives around the world still try to solve the mystery. They look at old letters and photos to find new clues.
