Lauper's musical journey began with significant challenges. She was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1953. She started writing songs and playing acoustic guitar at age 12. Before her solo success, she was a member of the band Blue Angel. The group released one studio album in 1980, but it did not sell well. Following the band's breakup, Lauper faced serious financial difficulties. She worked in retail and as a waitress at IHOP to support herself. During this time, she also suffered from an inverted cyst on her vocal cord. This medical issue caused her to temporarily lose her singing voice.

Her solo career reached new heights with her debut album, *She's So Unusual*, released in 1983. This record was a massive global success, peaking at number four in the United States. It was the first debut album by a female artist to achieve four top-five hits on the Billboard Hot 100. These hits included "Girls Just Want to Have Fun," "Time After Time," "She Bop," and "All Through the Night." Lauper often adjusted song lyrics to reflect her own values. For example, she rewrote the lyrics to "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" to create an anthem for young women.

Lauper's impact extended into the world of professional wrestling through a unique connection. In 1984, she appeared in the music video for "Girls Just Want to Have Fun," which featured wrestler "Captain" Lou Albano. This led to a storyline in the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) where Lauper managed wrestler Wendi Richter. Lauper helped manage Richter during her successful run, including the inaugural WrestleMania event. This collaboration helped bring the WWF into the mainstream media spotlight. She also appeared in the music video for "The Goonies 'R' Good Enough" in 1985, which featured various wrestling stars and the cast of the film *The Goonies*.

Her second studio album, *True Colors*, was released in 1986. This album also reached number four on the Billboard 200 charts. It produced two more top-five hits: the title track "True Colors" and "Change of Heart." Lauper continued to find success in different genres as well. In 2010, her album *Memphis Blues* became the most successful blues album of the year on Billboard. It remained at the number one spot on the Billboard Blues Albums chart for 13 consecutive weeks. This demonstrated her ability to master various musical styles beyond pop.

Lauper has earned many prestigious honors throughout her career. She won the Grammy Award for Best New Artist in 1985. In 2013, she won a Tony Award for Best Original Score for the Broadway musical *Kinky Boots*. She was the first woman to win this specific category by herself. The musical also won five other Tony Awards, including Best Musical.
